Since its founding in 1970, Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF International) has raised or directed nearly $5 billion to support the most promising, cutting-edge science to cure, prevent and treat type 1 diabetes (T1D). Alongside this commitment, Breakthrough T1D also raises awareness and supports the T1D community.


Breakthrough T1D Fundraising: $250 million and Growing

Breakthrough T1D’s overall operating budget (FY25) is $250M with 600 FTEs. Over the past 50+ years, the organization has developed a sophisticated, matrixed fundraising structure that supports strong personal relationships with donors, builds a pipeline of passionate supporters committed to advancing T1D research, and leverages the talents and passion of local volunteers. The Field Engagement structure combines local knowledge and relationships built by community-oriented field staff (28 Chapters, organized in 3 Regions) with the specialized expertise of national teams focused on key fundraising strategies. As one national 501c3, the local, regional, and national fundraising teams work in close and constant collaboration with each other. 

 

The Greater New York Chapter

The Greater New York Chapter covers all of New York state as well as Fairfield County, CT. The chapter’s FY25 fundraising goal is $13.5 million, including a strategic mix of peer-to-peer, signature events, leadership giving, and other activities. Chapter staff work closely with volunteer boards (non-governing) in three key markets across the state.


The main chapter office is based in lower Manhattan (with national headquarters). The chapter also has an office in Albany and staff working remotely in other areas of the state. In addition to the Executive Director, the chapter has 22 staff members. Currently, chapter staff is either on a hybrid schedule or remote depending on location. 


The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for leading staff and volunteers to succeed in meeting the objectives of Breakthrough T1D’s mission.  Managing the growth of chapter revenue, reach, retention and engagement targets, the ED has strategic oversight of budget development, planning, implementation and evaluation of all fundraising activities and community engagement initiatives deployed by chapter staff and in collaboration with national development partners, the Regional Director, and chapter Boards of Directors.
